In this article, we will discuss Arun Jaitley Stadium.

  Arun Jaitley Stadium

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is a cricket arena held and managed the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and found on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi. It was founded in 1883 as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium and called after the nearby Kotla Fort.

It is the second oldest operating international cricket arena in India, after the Eden Gardens of Kolkata. As of 25 October 2019, it has organized 34 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 6 T20Is.

In a 2017 congratulations ceremony, the DDCA called four stands of the stadium after retired India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath, and former India and Delhi opener Gautam Gambhir. The home team’s dressing space was called after Raman Lamba and the away dressing space behind Prakash Bhandari.

On 12 September 2019, the arena name was changed in memory of retired DDCA President and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, after his demise on 24 August 2019.

DDCA president Rajat Sharma stated: “It was Arun Jaitley’s help and motivation that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and numerous others could make India proud.”

Arun Jaitley has even been credited with diverting the arena into a modern structure, expanding its seating capacity, and constructing better structures for players during his term as DDCA president. The arena was officially changed name at a function that occurred on 12 September 2019.

One of the stands of the arena was named after retired Indian captain Virat Kohli on the exact date. The word change has been slammed by former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi. After revealing the name change, DDCA explained that only the stadium had been renamed and that the ground would be still named the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground.

As of 2017, the India national cricket team had been undefeated for over 28 years in Test matches and for over 10 years in ODI matches at this ground.

  History

The first Test game at this stadium was held on 10 November 1948 when India played against the West Indies.

In 2009, an ODI game between India and Sri Lanka was called off because the pitch circumstances were considered to be inappropriate to organize a game.

The arena has been the home of the Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) of the Indian Premier League since 2008.

In 2017, smog caused Sri Lanka cricketers to stop playing and use anti-pollution masks during the third Test of their tour of India.
