Location and History
The stadium worked as the home ground for the Himachal Pradesh cricket team for Ranji Trophy tournaments and other domestic tournaments. The arena also organized some IPL games as a home stadium for Kings XI Punjab.
The scenic arena is special in India as it is located at an altitude of 1,457 m above sea level and has snow-capped Himalayan mountains in the surroundings.
Reaching Dharamsala from the nearby Kangra Airport, which is approximately 8 kilometers out through the hilly terrain and the harsh winters, during which it showers and snows, is a barrier to organizing frequent matches.
Dav Whatmore, the retired Director of the National Cricket Academy in India had suggested during his term that the stadium is appropriate for organizing international cricket matches. The foremost international team that played on this ground was the Pakistani cricket team when they came for a warm-up match against an India A side in 2005.
The foremost One Day International (ODI) at this arena was held between India and England on the date of 27 January 2013. England succeeded in the match by 7 wickets. The foremost Test in this arena was held between India and Australia from 25 to 29 March 2017.
India succeeded in the Test match easily by 8 wickets. In November 2015, the HPCA stadium was chosen as one of the six new Test match platforms in India along with the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, JSCA International Stadium Complex, Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Holkar Stadium, and Dr. Y.S.
Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. The arena has been used sporadically for IPL tournaments and due to its high altitude has a standing for six hitting.
Adam Gilchrist evolved as the first player to make a century in the IPL 2011 at the HPCA stadium in 2011 against RCB, an innings that had a 122m six off Charl Langeveldt.
