History
The MCA’s conclusion to construct a new Cricket arena in Pune stemmed from a conflict with the Pune Municipal Corporation, concerning ticket allocations for Nehru Stadium.
This dispute reached to a head when an international match between India and Sri Lanka was pushed to Kolkata, with the MCA saying they were in no place to organize the match. Heeding this, the MCA selected a new stadium. The groundbreaking ritual was conducted on the construction site on 21 October 2007 by the BCCI president Sharad Pawar.
MCA awarded the agreement to make the first phase of the construction to M/S Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd company in November 2009. The building work began on 14 November 2007.
MCA was inaugurated by the then ICC President and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on 1 April 2012. In 2013, the Indian company Sahara India Pariwar purchased the naming rights, and the arena was renamed the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.
However, the name was switched back to the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium because Sahara spent only a part of the Rs. 200 crore that it had pledged when acquiring the rights.
The main part of the building is finished but the final phase of the construction is still however to finish. This arena was designed by British architect Sir Michael Hopkins, who is credited with developing Lord’s Cricket Ground’s mount stand and Ages Bowl Stadium of Southampton in England.
In November 2015, the stadium was chosen as one of the six new Test stadiums along with Holkar Stadium, JSCA International Stadium Complex, Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium and Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in India.
The arena has been the home ground for Pune Warriors India, Punjab Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Chennai Super Kings in the (IPL) Indian Premier League.
