  Biography  

Nehal first began playing cricket at the age of 9 years. Originally, he used to work as a specialist batsman and place in long hours to perform his fitness.

He is usually guided by his nickname “new-age Yuvraj Singh” for his middle-order performances and likeness in batting style with former cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

He began playing cricket under the direction of his childhood coach Charanjit Bhangu. He was guided by Harjinder Singh in age-level cricket, who noticed “glimpses of Yuvraj” on Nehal.

He obtained his coaching at the Ludhiana District Cricket Association. He graduated from Satish Chander Dhawan Government College located in Punjab.

 


 

 

  Early career  

Nehal played for Punjab under-16 and under-19 cricket teams in Vijay Merchant Trophy and Cooch Behar Trophy from 2015 to 2018, with 529 runs in the 2017–18 season. He was then chosen to play for various tiers of India’s under-19 cricket team.

He completed his under-19 debut for India on 17 July 2018, against Sri Lanka in a four-day match and made 82 runs.

He also evolved as the 3rd cricketer from Ludhiana to go for India at any level. In August 2018, he was listed in India’s squad for the 2016 Asian Cricket Council Under-19 Asia Cup.

In April 2022, at the time of the semi-final of the Inter-District U-23 Cricket Championship, he made 578 runs in an innings, beating Brian Lara’s record of highest score in an innings in a four-day match.

He also evolved as the quickest player to get 200, 300, 400, and 500 runs in any level of admitted cricket, and was marked by Junior Chamber International for his performance.

 


 

 

  Domestic career  

In December 2020, Wadhera was called for Punjab’s squad for the 2020–21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

In December 2022, he was purchased by the Mumbai Indians at a base price of ₹20 lakh in an IPL auction, to play for them in the Indian Premier League 2023.

He evolved as the third player from the Ludhiana district to obtain an IPL call-up. In January 2023, he was chosen to play for Punjab in the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy. He completed his first-class debut on 3 January 2023 for Punjab, against Gujarat.

He produced a match-winning century in his debut match, making 123 runs, and guiding Punjab to a 380-run win.

He smashed his maiden double hundred in his only third first-class game, making 214 runs against Madhya Pradesh on 18 January 2023. He got the Player of the Match award and completed his maiden first-class season with 376 runs from 7 innings.
