Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is a cricket stadium that is located in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

In July 2010, the Central Provincial Council located in Kandy revealed the idea to change the name of the arena to praise the legendary Sri Lankan player Muttiah Muralitharan but hasn’t officially accomplished so.

The arena was inaugurated on 27 November 2009 and evolved as the 104th Test arena in the globe in December 2010.


  Location and Background  

The stadium is situated around a half-hour drive east of Kandy, Srilanka. The stadium is fully operated by Sri Lanka Cricket and has a capacity of 35,000 viewers.


  History  

The stadium was built for the 2011 Cricket World Cup games along with Hambantota International Cricket Stadium. The first Test match was held in this stadium between Sri Lanka and the West Indies and was scheduled from 1 to 5 December 2010.

The first One Day International game at the arena was held between New Zealand and Pakistan on 8 March 2011. This arena is home to the Kandurata cricket team.

It was declared that the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium would organize 9 games on 21 September 2011, the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Tournaments.
