Teams

An official match is played between two teams that consist of nine or seven players.

A team can carry two time-outs of 30 seconds each at the time of a set. The first team to make 25 points succeeds in a set. A match usually consists of three sets.

Service

Service is taken within five seconds after the referee whistles and is accomplished from the service zone, without crossing the back line.

A player can freely bounce while serving the ball without crossing the back line. The service ball must not contact with the net.

Dual contact with the ball is not permitted for acquiring the service ball and players remain in a 2-3-2 circumstances during the serve.

Rally

At the time of a rally, the ball must be acquired at one time with both hands, without any movement of the ball within the hands (dubs) and the ball should not have touch with the land.

  History  

According to the Throwball Federation of India (TFI), throwball is believed to have emanated from a recreational game famous among women in England and Australia at the time of the 1930s. The YMCA conveyed the sport to Chennai, where it was organized as a women’s sport in the 1940s.

Harry Crowe Buck, who established the YMCA College of Physical Education in Chennai, prepared policies for throwball rules and regulations in 1955. In expansion, Mr. Jagat Singh Chauhan was the creator/father of throwball, handball, and netball in India. The sport advanced Bangalore in the 1950s.

The Throwball Federation of India (TFI) was initiated along with the Indian National Throwball Championship. By 1990, Throwball in India formed individual matches for both men and women.

  Throw Ball Rules  

The Throw Ball rules are as follows:

a. The throwball game is a team game. Each team is composed of twelve players with 7 players involved at the time of play and 5 players for substitution.

b. The game is played for the best of 3 sets for 25 points to win in each set with a rally score.

c. The participants need to grab the ball with both hands and return it with one hand only.

d. The ball that is to be served must be thrown from above the shoulder/shoulder line of the participant.

e. The service ball should not contact the net.

f. Double contacts are not permitted for accepting the service ball.

g. The participants must serve the ball after the whistle is blown within 5 seconds.

h. Participants should serve the ball from the service region but without invading the end line.

i. If the participant ball has dropped on the box line or in the dead region, then it is taken as a foul.

j. Any ball that has been grabbed at the time of the rally is to be thrown within 3 seconds.

k. The participant has to remain in a 2-3-2 position at the time of service.

l. Participants are not permitted to move the ball from right to left or left to right otherwise, penalty points are provided.

m. In the whole match, there are only two time-outs of 30 seconds provided in each set.

n. The participants are required to wear a proper uniform, i.e. shorts and a jersey with numbers published on both the front and the back of the jersey. Only digits from 1-12 are permitted to be employed.

o. Two participants cannot grab the ball at the same time, or the team fails to get points.
